A Time of Grace and Encounter
Advent is a season of grace in which the pilgrim Church pauses to contemplate the mystery of the Lord’s coming. It is a time of active waiting, of embodied hope, when the heart prepares to welcome once again the living presence of Christ. It is not merely a preparation for a liturgical celebration, but an opening of the soul to be transformed by the Love that comes to meet us.
“Stay Awake”: The Lord’s Invitation
In the quiet prayer of this season, the Lord whispers to us: “Stay awake.”
His coming is our greatest hope. Even though we do not know the day of His return or the hour of our own departure, we learn that the Christian journey is always an ascent. We rise toward the mountain of the Lord (cf. Is 2:1–5), letting go of what is vain so we may walk freely toward the light of Christ.
Pilgrims of Love and Faith
During Advent, every believer becomes a pilgrim of love and faith. It is an interior path marked by prayer, conversion, and service, where the promise of Emmanuel—“God with us”—is renewed. On this journey we learn to listen in silence, to wait without anxiety, and to trust in the love the Father pours into our hearts.
Watchfulness: A Heart Awake for Christ
Jesus himself gave us the key:
“Keep watch, for you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” (cf. Mt 24:42–44)
Christian vigilance is not fear, but awakened love. To stay alert means recognizing God’s presence in daily life, living with a ready heart, and walking under the light of His Word.
Saint Paul echoes this call: “The night is far spent and the day is at hand” (cf. Rom 13:11–14). From the prophets to the apostles, the message is the same: walk toward the light, leaving behind everything that darkens the heart.
Advent as a New Birth
The purpose of Advent is not only to remember the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, but to allow Him to be born anew within us.
Every act of charity, every candle lit, every moment of prayer becomes a step on the path toward the fullness of encountering Christ.
Mary, the first pilgrim of Advent, teaches us how to wait with faith, believe in the impossible, and welcome the divine will with love.
A Manger in the Heart
To live Advent with intention is to make of the soul a manger where God’s love takes flesh and renews hope. It is a time of tenderness that purifies our vision and strengthens the heart. In this sacred season, the Holy Spirit leads us into the joy of a promise fulfilled: the Son of God dwells among us, turning waiting into certainty, darkness into light, and distance into communion.
A Hope That Does Not Disappoint
Thus, Advent becomes a path of hope that does not disappoint (cf. Rom 5:5), drawing us closer to the mystery of a God who continues to come, continues to love, and invites us to walk beside Him as true Pilgrims of Hope.
“What joy when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’” (Ps 122).
This cry of joy becomes our prayer—for ourselves, our children, the Church, and all humanity. May not a single soul be lost. Good Father, make us heralds of Your Word, bearers of Your love, witnesses of the hope that comes from You alone. Beloved Jesus, increase our faith and make us instruments of Your peace.
Your grace is enough.
Reflect
- How will you prepare to receive Christmas… and the return of the Savior?
- How much time do you dedicate to prayer each day?
- Are you nourishing yourself with Scripture? Do you practice spiritual exercises?
- What concrete gestures can you live this Advent to draw closer to God?
